He who seeks

I was 20, or 21
working on a farm in the West Country
driving tractors to the cliff's edge
humping hay bales high in the back of the barn

I drove 100 miles
late on a midsummer evening
to see her, blonde and beaming
fragile

the priest came in and asked me
What did I do?
I worked on a farm
She scoffed

Why did I come here?
To see her, I said
I was more than welcome
he said

if I was seeking

Space

She gives me the space I need to be a little boy, to play with my toys - so that I can become a man.

"Jacqueline du Pré met pianist Daniel Barenboim on New Year's Eve 1966. Shortly after the Six-Day War ended, she cancelled all her existing engagements (to the enormous annoyance of promoters[4]), and they flew to Jerusalem. She converted to Judaism overnight, and they were married on 15 June 1967[5] at the Western Wall. Their marriage brought about one of the most fruitful relationships in music, with some commentators comparing the pairing to that of Robert and Clara Schumann. This was evidenced by the many performances of du Pré with Barenboim as either a pianist or conductor."

Black and white

Bad news for Uncle Dick.

64 words:
We read the headlines and the wiki pages, wonder how you live your life, find the power in the stars. You embody hope for us all, a candle in the wind, for all of us across the world. We all give in to this overwhelming might of the ‘powerful', the fearful. They fear love, the unknown. You know, you love, and we love you.

Angels

"I can see myself in your eyes," she said.

"How do you look?" he said.

Her eyes wrinkled slightly, and a faint smile came on her lips. He kissed her again, daring to wonder.

No Place so Sacred from such Fops is barr'd,

Nor is Paul's Church more safe than Paul's Church-yard:

Nay, fly to Altars; there they'll talk you dead;

For Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread.

tergiversation

1. The act of practicing evasion or of being deliberately ambiguous.
2. The act of abandoning a party or cause.

"No doubt if I worked on it, I could evolve some kind of double-talk that would get around the offensive phrase, and make the, to me, face-saving implication; but to hell with that, I have too much respect for the English language, and for your understanding of it, to go in for tergiversation and weasely circumlocution."

Richard Gillman, "Standing Up to Ezra Pound", New York Times, August 25, 1991

Tergiversation comes from Latin tergiversatus, past participle of tergiversari, "to turn one's back, to shift," from tergum, "back" + versare, frequentative of vertere, "to turn." The verb form is tergiversate.

Lessons

There come times when you have to let people go, not because you don't like them, but because you love them.

That was a hard one to learn.

The Beaufort Scale

Force 0: Calm

Sea: Flat.

Land: Calm. Smoke rises vertically.

1: Light air

Ripples without crests.

Wind motion visible in smoke.

2 Light breeze

Small wavelets. Crests of glassy appearance, not breaking

Wind felt on exposed skin. Leaves rustle.

3 Gentle breeze

Large wavelets. Crests begin to break; scattered whitecaps

Leaves and smaller twigs in constant motion.

4 Moderate breeze

Small waves with breaking crests. Fairly frequent white horses.

Dust and loose paper raised. Small branches begin to move.

5 Fresh breeze

Moderate waves of some length. Many white horses. Small amounts of spray.

Branches of a moderate size move. Small trees begin to sway.

6 Strong breeze

Long waves begin to form. White foam crests are very frequent. Some airborne spray is present.

Large branches in motion. Whistling heard in overhead wires. Umbrella use becomes difficult. Empty plastic garbage cans tip over.

7 High wind, Moderate gale, Near gale

Sea heaps up. Some foam from breaking waves is blown into streaks along wind direction. Moderate amounts of airborne spray.

Whole trees in motion. Effort needed to walk against the wind. Swaying of skyscrapers may be felt, especially by people on upper floors.

8 Gale, Fresh gale

Moderately high waves with breaking crests forming spindrift. Well-marked streaks of foam are blown along wind direction. Considerable airborne spray.

Some twigs broken from trees. Cars veer on road. Progress on foot is seriously impeded.

9 Strong gale

High waves whose crests sometimes roll over. Dense foam is blown along wind direction. Large amounts of airborne spray may begin to reduce visibility.

Some branches break off trees, and some small trees blow over. Construction/temporary signs and barricades blow over. Damage to circus tents and canopies.

10 Storm, Whole gale

Very high waves with overhanging crests. Large patches of foam from wave crests give the sea a white appearance. Considerable tumbling of waves with heavy impact. Large amounts of airborne spray reduce visibility.

Trees are broken off or uprooted, saplings bent and deformed. Poorly attached asphalt shingles and shingles in poor condition peel off roofs.

11 Violent storm

Exceptionally high waves. Very large patches of foam, driven before the wind, cover much of the sea surface. Very large amounts of airborne spray severely reduce visibility.

Widespread vegetation damage. Many roofing surfaces are damaged; asphalt tiles that have curled up and/or fractured due to age may break away completely.

12 Hurricane

Huge waves. Sea is completely white with foam and spray. Air is filled with driving spray, greatly reducing visibility.

Very widespread damage to vegetation. Some windows may break; mobile homes and poorly constructed sheds and barns are damaged. Debris may be hurled about.

Hier encore

Hier encore
Just yesterday
J'avais vingt ans
I was 20 years old
Je caressais le temps
I caressed time
Et jouais de la vie
and played with life
Comme on joue de l'amour
like you play with love
Et je vivais la nuit
and I lived the night
Sans compter sur mes jours
without counting on my days
Qui fuyaient dans le temps
which fled in time

J'ai fait tant de projets
I made so many plans
Qui sont restés en l'air
which are left in the air
J'ai fondé tant d'espoirs
I set so many hopes
Qui se sont envolés
which have all flown away
Que je reste perdu
and here I am lost
Ne sachant où aller
not knowing where to go
Les yeux cherchant le ciel
my eyes look for the sky
Mais le coeur mis en terre
but my heart's in the earth

Hier encore
J'avais vingt ans
Je gaspillais le temps
En croyant l'arrêter
Et pour le retenir
Même le devancer
Je n'ai fait que courir
Et me suis essoufflé

Ignorant le passé
Conjuguant au futur
Je précédais de moi
Toute conversation
Et donnais mon avis
Que je voulais le bon
Pour critiquer le monde
Avec désinvolture

Hier encore
J'avais vingt ans
Mais j'ai perdu mon temps
A faire des folies
Qui ne me laissent au fond
Rien de vraiment précis
Que quelques rides au front
Et la peur de l'ennui

Car mes amours sont mortes
Avant que d'exister
Mes amis sont partis
Et ne reviendront pas
Par ma faute j'ai fait
Le vide autour de moi
Et j'ai gâché ma vie
Et mes jeunes années

Du meilleur et du pire
En jetant le meilleur
J'ai figé mes sourires
Et j'ai glacé mes pleurs
Où sont-ils à présent
A présent mes vingt ans?
